City Tours of Augsburg in English by native English speakers!
Augsburg is a town nearly 1,200 years older than Munich, with sights to prove it. Founded by order of Emperor Augustus in 15BC, it quickly became the capital of the region until the end of the empire. For most of its history since that time it maintained its independence from neighboring countries such as Bavaria as it was a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire.
During each era of history since its founding Augsburg has come to the forefront of German and European history for reasons varying from religious to industrial.
The German Medici, the Fugger family, at one time financed the crown of the Holy Roman Empire and was without question the richest family in Europe. See their home, their influence on the city, and hear their story.
Some of the highlights include:
- The Rathaus (Town Hall) with its golden hall (optional golden hall entry €2 not included)
- Basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra, a catholic church connected to a protestant church as a result of the peace of Augsburg in 1555
- The Bishop’s residence, where Lutheranism’s first treatise was presented
- St. Anna’s Church, where Martin Luther stayed for the Imperial Diet and argued with Cardinal Cajetan about his anti-papal theology.
- The world’s first social housing complex, the Fuggerei (optional entry fee of €4 not included)
So if you would like to see a 2,000 year old city, the gem of the famous Romantic Road, you can e-mail or comment here for a private tour any time of the year. Unfortunately due to DB (the German rail company) dramatically increasing train costs by 31% this year, regular tours have been suspended. A standard tour of Augsburg (excluding any transportation costs) is currently set at €180 for a three hour tour. Public transportation tickets at-cost can be arranged easily from Munich, of course also adding to the time needed in Augsburg. Special shorter or longer tours can also be arranged.
I would like to take this tour. I was wondering if it had enough people to run today?
Hi Robert,
Most tours in the last few months have gone with low numbers, but they still run. Usual group sizes at the moment are 4-6 people. Nearly all from Munich. If you want to meet in Augsburg, please let me know the date as with the Christmas markets, I may not find you otherwise!
HI there,
My husband, I, and brother-in-law will drive on Thursday to Augusburg (1/5) for the day. Will there be a tour running that day? We will be driving from Rosenheim.
Danke,
Eileen
Hi Eileen: sorry, no tours on Thursday. Every Tuesday and Friday we have tours.
